Tougher tests await and Perryville field hockey coach Janet Candy thinks her team will be up to the challenge.
The Panthers (4-0) finished off a four-game stretch of non-division games by blanking Edgewood 4-0 Friday afternoon. Cayley Hall scored three goals in the first half as the Rising Sun field hockey team earned its first win by downing visiting North East 4-0 last Thursday.
The Perryville field hockey team has high expectations. The Panthers lost two starters from last season's team including center midfielder Merve Akbay, but return 10 seniors this fall. Senior Lacie Flores is a three-year starter in goal. "Lacie has worked with these girls in high school and in summer and indoors. They know her and trust her," said coach Janet Candy. Rising Sun field hockey team is working to narrow the gap with some of the region's perennial powers.
The Tigers finished 9-5 last season but lost 8-0 to Hereford in the region final for the second straight season. Rising Sun lost five starters to graduation but has a solid nucleus back. Kendie Hudson hoped to return to Cecil County to teach and coach.
Her dreams were realized quickly. Just a few months removed from Elizabethtown College graduation, Hudson accepted a math teaching position at North East High and is the head varsity field hockey coach for the Indians. Perryville field hockey coach Janet Candy says playing Fallston is like a 12-round fight.
In last Wednesday's 1A north region final, the Panthers narrowly avoided an early round knockout, fought back furiously in the latter stages, but ultimately were unable to land enough blows. The 14-time state champion Cougars ended Perryville's season with a 2-0 triumph. The Perryville field hockey team will enter the postseason on a bit of a downer.
The Panthers suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to host North East Friday. The Rising Sun field hockey team battled to a 0-0 tie with visiting Bohemia Manor Wednesday.
The teams played two 10-minute overtime periods and a best-of-five penalty stroke shootout but could not break the deadlock. The Perryville and Rising Sun field hockey teams each recorded a victory at the University of Delaware Monday night.
The Panthers downed Bohemia Manor 3-0. Krissy McDuff scored a goal in each half and Kyleigh Knell added a first half goal. The Tigers nipped North East 1-0 on a goal by Mallory Tiffin midway through the second half. |
